M82 in Ursa Major

M82 is an irregular galaxy in the constellation of Ursa Major, and is close to M81 in the night sky. It is around 7 million ly away, measures 16,000 ly across and shines at magnitude 9.5 which makes it barely visible in binoculars. Its irregular shape may have been caused by a collision with M81 several hundred million years ago ; the two are still connected by a stream of intergalactic gases
