M78 in Orion
M78 is located just above the three stars that make up Orion's Belt. It is a reflection nebula, made up from the same gas and dust clouds as the main Orion Nebula M42. It is therefore around 1500 ly from Earth and at magnitude 8 is visible in binoculars from a reasonably dark viewing site. A telescope is much more suitable, bringing out some of the subtle structure of this nebula.
