M5 is one of the finest globular clusters in the entire night sky. Shining at magnitude 5.8 across a distance of around 28,000 ly, it is easily visible in binoculars. Like all globular clusters, it resides in a halo of clusters around our galaxy and was discovered by Gotfried Kirch in 1702.
