NGC 253

Copyright: NASA / STScI

NGC 253 is the brightest member of the Sculptor Group of galaxies. It is around 10 million light years away but still shines with a magnitude of around 8.00. This is a spiral galaxy which appears almost edge on but it is clear from the many brighter regions that a considerable amount of star formation is currently taking place. It is possible to see NGC 253 with binoculars provided the observing site is free from light pollution.
